The Differences in Medigap and the Other Medicare Parts
Medicare has four distinct parts, including the following:
- Part A (hospital insurance)
- Part B (medical insurance)
- Part C (Medicare Advantage)
- Part D (prescription drugs)
What Is a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan?
Also known as Medigap, Medicare supplement insurance plans are policies designed to work in tandem with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). These plans may help cover costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay for, like co-payments, co-insurance and yearly deductibles.
You can choose among different Medigap plans depending on the level of coverage you desire. Medigap plans have a monthly premium.
Unlike Part C (Medicare Advantage), a standalone alternative to Original Medicare, Medigap is designed to supplement Original Medicare benefits.
While Medicare Part D is specifically for prescription drug costs, standard Medigap policies sold today don’t include prescription drug coverage. You must enroll in a separate Part D plan if you want that.
Medicare Advantage plans often have network restrictions. In contrast, Medigap offers the flexibility to visit any health care provider that accepts Medicare.
